It's been a while since I have just let loose and gone off on some subjects, so today is the day - here we go:
First, I think it is absolutely crazy that we are spending tax dollars trying to determine if a baseball player used steroids or not. Okay, let me modify - I think it is crazy that we are using congress's time to determine if a baseball player used steroids or not. Isn't congress supposed to be setting the course for our nation? Aren't they supposed to be figuring out how to keep America the greatest nation on the planet Earth? Aren't they supposed to be looking over our massive budget and figuring out how they can do more for less? Aren't they supposed to be figuring out systems that help people prosper, so that there is more money to give to the poor and those in need?
Maybe I'm off on this one, maybe congress really is supposed to be involved with pro sports.
Second, what in the world ever happened to showing respect to others? I wanted to puke as I watched some of the State of the Union. It makes me furious to watch Congressmen, (and women) show such disregard to the office of the President. I don't care what our President has done right or wrong, when the people working with him show such poor character in showing their respect it makes our nation a joke across our world. You can get behind close doors and fight all you want, but when you are at the State of the Union it would be helpful if we all appeared to be on the same team.
While I don't pretend to understand all that President Bush has done right or wrong I will give him my respect. One reason is he deserves it as president, the second reason is that he has not allowed all of his critics to change his convictions - right or wrong. I would love to sit down with him after he leaves office and pick his brain. I might not agree with him on everything, but I bet I could learn a few things from him.
So there are a few things on my mind today. Have a great day! I'm going to Taco Mayo for lunch now.
You're not alone in thinking its crazy that our law makers are doing the job of the court system, but then, activist judges have usurped Congress' power(making law) for so long that perhaps it's some weird reversal of the checks and balance system. Besides, it's much easier for them to distract themselves with minutia of something like steroids in baseball than to solve real problems - like cutting pork barrel spending, funding the troops properly so we can finish the war in a timely manner, welfare reform, public education that actually works, etc. Sometimes, I think the whole system is corrupt and needs to be re-booted. It seems more and more like we're getting less and less choice in our representative democracy anyway(in the last presidential election we got choose between a rich white guy who graduated from Yale in 1968 and was a member of the Skull and Bones Society while he was there, or a rich white guy you graduated from Yale in 1966 and was a member of the skull and bones society as well). Although I do agree with you that at least Bush has stuck to his guns, and has led by his principles instead of the direction of public opinion.
This year's Presedential Election offers more diversity in the outward appearance and background of the candidates but less choice in their political position.
Sorry about the rambling... I do enjoy your blog. Hope the taco mayo was good.

Personally, I think the steroids thing is an attempt to distract the masses from everything else. (Is it working?)
Besides, I'm still waiting for the government to get around to really pressing business...like a Congressional inquiry into the BCS. There's something awfully fishy about that Fiesta Bowl, I tell ya.

2 things:
1) Congress is doing what they are doing because they care about justice. Now, we all know that there are bigger things going on in the world, but right now, with the way steroids are being used, and especially with new technologies like the HGH Hormone being brought into the picture , this is sort of a big deal. They are in the process of MAKING LAWS about these issues. The point of this congressional hearing is so that congress stay better informed about the world. So I would say, that instead of us sitting back and wondering why congress isn't talking about bigger things, we be the reason that congress talks about bigger things. When is the last time that we have all gone up to the capitol to talk to our congressman or congresswomen about what's going on within the walls of our government. We have a say in what is talked about... if we care enough. But I think some of us just sit back and say nothing. And when we do that, it is tough to justify complaining about our tax dollars being wasted by congress.
2) Does status mean that one deserves respect? No. I think a lot is to be said for a congress who desires change and shows discontent with a current leader. I mean, I don't know who is paying attention but I think the rest of the world pretty much hates us right now. I think it's a beautiful thing that half the congress doesn't support a leader who has gained us negative global rapport for a majority of his time in office. And I think that it might give the world hope that so many of us our hoping for something different these days. I would hate to see a congress that stood and clapped for everything that the President said during his address. In fact, it'd be scary.
